emergency roof repairA damaged roof is one issue that homeowners should never ignore. While most modern roofs are incredibly sturdy and designed to last for 20 years or longer, damage can happen at any time. Read ahead for a look at just a few of the signs your roof is in need of emergency repairs or ready to be replaced entirely.

You Can See Daylight Through the Roof Boards
Every homeowner should take at least a few minutes to search their attic for damage once or twice a year. The best way to do this is to head into the attic during the middle of the day and look for any pinholes of sunlight. If sunlight is getting through your roof, then you can rest assured water can as well.
Damaged Insulation
Your insulation might have a bigger impact on your life than you realize. Not only will the proper insulation keep your family comfortable, but it will also keep your energy bills to a bare minimum. Damaged insulation is another sign that your roof could be leaking. You might also begin to notice a musty smell in your attic or see patches of mold depending on how long the leak has been there.

Buckling or Curling Shingles
Buckling shingles are not necessarily a sign that your roof needs to be replaced entirely, but this damage can compromise the structure of your home if it is not addressed immediately. Homeowners who have noticed cracked or curling shingles should consider how old their roof is before deciding on what to do. A roof that is over 20 years old with this type of damage might need to be replaced entirely.

Your Roof Has a Spongy Feel
A sturdy and undamaged roof will have almost no give when you stand on it. The wooden joists and beams should be able to easily hold the weight of multiple adults with little movement. When the wood becomes damaged, however, it might begin to feel spongy under your feet. Unlike damaged shingles, this is one problem that will most likely require you to replace the roof entirely.
